FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about ordering live feeder insects from Wasatch Feeder Insects? Here are the most common things to know before placing your order.
What feeder insects do you sell?
We currently offer live banded crickets in multiple sizes, including pinhead, 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, and 7/8 inch crickets.
What are banded crickets?
Banded crickets are a popular feeder cricket species used for reptiles, amphibians, birds, and other insect-eating pets. They are known for being active feeders and are commonly used by reptile keepers and exotic pet owners.
How do I choose the right cricket size?
As a general rule, feeder insects should be no larger than the space between your pet’s eyes. If you are unsure, it is usually better to choose a smaller size and move up as your animal grows.
What cricket size should I order for baby reptiles?
Pinhead, 1/8 inch, and 1/4 inch crickets are typically best for hatchlings, baby reptiles, small geckos, dart frogs, and other small insect-eating pets.
What cricket size should I order for adult reptiles?
Adult reptiles and larger insect-eating pets often do well with 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, or 7/8 inch crickets, depending on the species and size of the animal.
How are live crickets shipped?
Live crickets are packed with care and shipped from Utah. Because live insects are sensitive to temperature and shipping delays, orders may be timed around weather and carrier conditions.
Do you guarantee live arrival?
We do our best to ship healthy, active insects and support customers when an issue occurs. To qualify for live arrival support, packages must be brought indoors promptly after delivery and any concerns must be reported within the timeframe listed in our Shipping & Live Arrival Policy.
What should I do when my crickets arrive?
Bring the package indoors right away, open it carefully, and move the crickets into a ventilated keeper or container with egg crate, food, and a safe moisture source.
How should I store live crickets?
Keep crickets in a ventilated container at a stable room temperature. Provide egg crate or climbing material, dry food or gut-load feed, and moisture from cricket water crystals or fresh produce. Avoid standing water, excess humidity, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures.
How long will crickets live after arrival?
Cricket lifespan depends on temperature, size, age, handling, and care after delivery. Proper ventilation, food, moisture, and clean storage can help them stay active longer.
Can I feed crickets right away?
Yes, crickets can usually be fed shortly after arrival. For better nutrition, many customers choose to gut-load crickets before feeding them to their pets.
What does gut-loading mean?
Gut-loading means feeding crickets a nutritious food source before offering them to your animal. This helps improve the nutritional value of the feeder insect.
Should I dust crickets with calcium or vitamins?
Many reptiles and amphibians benefit from calcium or vitamin dusting, but needs vary by species. Follow your animal’s care requirements or consult a reptile-savvy veterinarian if you are unsure.
Can I leave crickets in my pet’s enclosure?
Do not leave loose crickets in your pet’s enclosure for extended periods. Uneaten crickets can stress or bother animals, especially young, shedding, or resting pets. Remove uneaten crickets when possible.
